STAR Mutual RRG
Fraud Statement

At STAR Mutual RRG, we are steadfast in our commitment to integrity, transparency, ethics, and conducting business with the highest standards.
Fraud undermines our relationships with policyholders that are built on trust and also disrupts the connections we maintain with appointed agents and other stakeholders.
We take fraud prevention seriously: we vigilantly identify and address fraudulent activities.

What constitutes insurance fraud?

Insurance fraud occurs when either an individual or a group of individuals knowingly falsify information, conceal essential facts, or misrepresent details related to the insurance policy or a claim with the intent to secure financial gains or other benefits. These acts are aimed directly at exploiting insurance companies.

Examples of such fraudulent behavior include, but are not limited to:

Falsifying driver details

A company misrepresents the number of drivers or their qualifications in order to reduce the insurance premium amount.

Using unscheduled vehicles

A business fails to report vehicles owned and operated by the transportation company.

Falsifying injury claims

Claimants exaggerate or fake injuries resulting from an accident to seek compensation.

Not reporting vehicle modifications

A transportation business fails to disclose significant vehicle alterations that increase risk, such as engine upgrades or cargo adjustments.

Conducting deliberate vehicle disposal

Individuals intentionally destroy a vehicle in order to file a claim and collect insurance payouts.

Staging accidents / "Swoop and squat" schemes

Individuals intentionally orchestrate a fraudulent line of events, such as when one car abruptly cuts in front of another, causing a deliberate collision with a commercial vehicle (a truck or a service van). After the accident, exaggerated claims for injuries and damages are filed.

Following questionable repair practices

Auto body shops exaggerate repair needs, inflate damage estimates and charge for unnecessary repairs, or conceal deductibles by increasing invoice amounts.

Indicators of potential fraud in commercial auto

Identifying potential fraud is critical for STAR Mutual RRG to safeguard our services' financial stability and ensure fairness and trust for all policyholders. Fraudulent activities not only harm the insurer but also increase costs for honest policyholders, making fraud prevention a shared responsibility.

While fraud can take many forms, there are often patterns of behavior or discrepancies in information that suggest further scrutiny may be necessary. These indicators can become noticeable at any stage of a claim or policy lifecycle and serve as valuable signals for deeper evaluation and, sometimes, investigation. Vigilance in recognizing these patterns lets us uphold the integrity of our processes and deliver equitable insurance solutions to our clients.

The impact of fraud in commercial auto

Commercial auto fraud is an issue that affects companies of all sizes, disrupting operations and creating financial strain across the industry. Scammers often choose to target commercial vehicles as they carry higher insurance limits than personal autos, making them lucrative targets for fraudulent claims.

Fraudulent claims inflate insurance costs, which can lead to increased premiums for honest policyholders and strain the resources of businesses relying on commercial auto coverage. Beyond the financial impact, fraud undermines a critical aspect of the insurance ecosystem—trust, affecting relationships between insurers, policyholders, and service providers.

For transportation businesses, the ripple effects of fraud can manifest in operational disruptions and damage to their reputation.

Furthermore, combating fraud diverts the insurer's resources that could otherwise be allocated toward innovation, improved services, or expanded coverage options. Tackling this issue is essential to fostering a stable and equitable insurance marketplace for all stakeholders.
